Chaplin (1992)

If you love watching chaplin movies then you got to see this as a compulsion. The master of biographies Richard Attenborough has made this movie on the life of the great Charlie Chaplin. Its his life story, about his childhood, his young days and about how he became Charlie Chaplin – The Tramp. You will find many unknown facts about his life, like how he found his cap and his stick, how one of his movie was thrashed everywhere and how he was expelled from the country. And after watching the movie your whole outlook towards Charlie the comedy man will change entirely. Then you will like to see all his movies again with a different mind set. A great film from a great film maker simply not to be missed.

Cry Freedom (1987)

After ‘Hotel Rwanda” it’s the second most powerful film I have seen on the war between the people and the government in Africa. This one is more about the war between the Black Africans and the White people. And it is based on a true story. Its showcases the political games which play with the lives of the people following truth. It’s a powerful story of a newspaper editor who makes friends with a revolutionary and then faces the consequences for it. It gives an idea of how the black revolutionaries were treated at that time by the government and brings out the ugly faces of the people behind it. Strongly Recommended for intense movie lovers.

The Making Of Mahatma (1996)

There is one completely different aspect of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and that is about his relationship with his family members. This movie touches that aspect of his life too along with showing the incidents and days which were responsible for the making of a Mahatma. It is somewhere resembling “Gandhi” by Attenborough and its shocking in certain scenes. Highly recommended who believe in Gandhi’s philosophy and want to know more finer details of his life. Another gem from Shyam Benegal.

Bandit Queen (1994)

Shekhar Kappor shook the whole Indian Film Industry and the viewers both with his movie Bandit Queen. It was simply the boldest and first of its kind movie with a very strong offensive language. The whole world took notice of this movie and it took Shekhar Kapoor straight to Hollywood. The other most important feature of this film was that Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gave the music of a Hindi Film for the first time and the songs rank among his best works. Strongly recommended, if you haven’t seen it yet.

Gandhi (1982)

A true epic of its kind on the life of “Father of Nation” – GANDHI. Richard Attenborough fulfills all expectations from this movie and as its always a kind of trend in India to oppose the films of this kind. No single person could point out any significant objection of the portray of characters in the movie. Ben Kingsley got a lifetime offer and he did justice to that with all his efforts. Such is his impact of his superb acting that now if anybody does a role of Gandhi, then he is simply compared with his efforts. A must see for all realistic movie watchers. Strongly recommended.

Sardar (1993)

At last a movie which shows the real picture of the happenings at the time of Indian Independence. Very few people from the current generation even know the name of Sardar Patel and his contribution in the freedom struggle. After viewing this, your whole outlook towards that struggle changes. The picture of Gandhi, Nehru and other people in your minds just will have a totally new deviation. So in my opinion this movie along with “Gandhi” by Richard Attenborough should be made compulsory to be shown in all the schools in India at the Secondary level. I am sure that it will change the outlook of at least 25% of the current young brigade. The movie is taken to commendable heights by Paresh Rawal as he plays the role of Sardar Patel with such a strong conviction. Certainly one of his best 5 movies till date. And special mention must be made of Ketan Mehta for executing it with such excellence. A must watch for all Indians.
Directed By Ketan Mehta
