Ijaazat (1987)

ijaazat-gulzar

While living the later years of his life, a lonely character suddenly meets a person (in a railway station’s waiting room), who was once the most important one in his life but had parted and gone onto living her own path, in her own way. What happens when two such persons meet, how they remember each personal moment they had lived and how they see the reasons of their separation once again with a new perspective. This is the subject of “Ijaazat”, a very intense, emotional and loving movie from “Gulzar”. The plot gets more enjoyable with two great artists Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha. Anuradha Patel completing the triangle also gives a memorable perfromance of her short career. And another main merit of movie is its music by R. D. Burman. In fact he has done a great job in putting the unconventional lyrics into beautiful compositions. And the songs blend into the scenes and narration beautifully. There are moments of silence in the movie which have a language of their own, and there are some well written one liner dialogue scenes, which are a treat to watch. Another not to be missed gem from the master film-maker, Gulzar. You are sure going to find this movie and its soundtrack both in the collection of almost every fan of bollywood movies.

Directed By Gulzar

Starring : Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha & Anuradha Patel

An Affair To Remember (1957)

It is often said in our part of the world that the Western people are short of emotions. May be the material world proves it but this movie shows the soft side of the West. “An Affair To Remember” is bundled with tender loving emotions of two strangers who meet at a ship voyage and knowingly that they should not, but still fall in love. The lead pair has acted just superbly and you really fall in love along with them while watching this loving drama with a touch of comedy.  Some scenes are hillarious as well as lovable and are capable of winning over the viewers completely.
Though the Indian viewers will find that this movie was very poorly copied as Aamir Khan’s “Mann” but still they can enjoy it immensely. Aamir Khan & Manisha Koirala in the Indian version could not meet the excellence achieved by Cary Grant & Debrorah Kerr in this original classic. Few sequences of the film will linger on in your hearts for a long time. The brilliant chemsitry between the lead couple gives the movie a tremendous repeat value. A strongly recommended romantic movie for young couples and for the young at heart. Indeed ”An Affair to Remember”.

The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

It was really surprising to see this sheer poetry on the celluloid coming from a person who is known more for his action and cowboy image, that’s Clint Eastwood. This is his emotional and sensitive movie which forces us to think about whether we are enjoying our lives being where we are, or we still regret the decision we made in our lives. I was completely spellbound as the end credits rolled and really enjoyed every minute of this movie till its last scene. The story is about four days in the life of a happily married lady, which she lived with a complete stranger. She cherishes and remembers those four days till her last breath and leaves her diaries with all her confessions for her two grown up children to read. Meryl Streep is superb and lovable as the lady and Clint Eastwood himself plays the role of the photographer who accidently comes in her life.
The movie has some emotionally written scenes which have a spiritual value. The dialogues make you look inside your own life and question your own existence and its worth. The unsaid conversations between Meryl and her husband, who know everything are filmed in the most impressive way. The best part is that as the children read their mother’s diaries, at first the boy feels disgusting reading it, but then understands the feelings of her mother who was also a loving women from inside. And its even more beautiful that at the end they both don’t feel any guilt for their mother but feel proud at her innocence and truthfulness.
Mahesh Manjrekar made “Astitva” in hindi, inspired from this movie, but changed the sensitive topic into a tense drama which becomes cunning and sarcastic in the end. He kept the character of the lady alive to face all the hardships after her confession. Whereas the original movie is lovable till the last scene, the hindi version has only one saving grace “Tabu” who has acted brilliantly. For many reasons, still “Meryl Streep” is more believable in her impactful act. She is just adorable in the scenes which show her inner conflicts. Along with “Clint Eastwood” they both look like real life lovers and talk through their eyes. This is a poetic expression on screen straight from heart, not to be missed, even if you have seen “Astitva” or not.

Pyaasa (1957)

According to my understanding of films, Guru Dutt is undoubtedly the most sensitive & emotional film makers of our industry, who could capture the tender feelings of a human heart in the most impressive and expressive manner. Not only this but he was also technically innovative as he used new camera angles and new techniques for shooting his scenes. Talking about his last films which in my opinion were also his best, he portrayed his characters so realistically, as if he knew that his end was very near. And he left the world giving his immortal gems to cherish. “Pyaasa” is a movie, in which a poet’s life and his poetry is depicted in the best possible way and it simply has no comparison even in the world cinema. Guru Dutt clearly showed how the world recognizes a great legend only after his death. And as I see it was quite an autobiographical view. His films which flopped at the time of release are now treated as masterpieces of Indian Cinema. If you can feel and sense poetry, if you live your life by your heart then just keep this movie with you always. And if possible make the younger generation familiar with this emotional cinema of legendary Guru Dutt. Respectfully Recommended.

Mausam (1975)

Sometimes destiny plays cruel games in life and that’s what this movie is all about. Sanjeev Kumar is in shock when he comes to know that her own daughter, which was a result of a relationship he had on one of his visits to an hill station is now a prostitute. And it all happened as he never returned to give her his name. An emotional story of regret and forgiveness. Gulzar once again gives a fine touchy movie with some fabulous songs. Madan Mohan gives memorable tunes to his rich lyrics. Sharmila Tagore is superb in the double role and a delight to watch.

Mera Naam Joker (1970)

An autobiographical kind of movie by the great showman Raj Kapoor. He has tried to captured the three phases in the life of a person, his childhood, his youth and his last years. Through the medium of cinema he explains how we fell in love again & again with more people in life as we progress and make more acquaintances. The film was not understood by the masses at its release as it was way ahead of its time. But now it is considered as one of the masterpieces of Indian Hall of Fame. Raj Kapoor shoots the dream sequences in the most impressive way and you can see that as the young Rishi Kapoor dreams about his teacher in the school. Just perfectly shown with the exact visulas. The adolescence part of the movie is the best part of this classic. Surely, it would be a crime to miss it, if you think from your heart.
Directed By Raj Kapoor
Starring : Raj Kapoor, Simi Grewal & Galaxy of Stars
Music By Shankar Jaikishan

Heer Ranjha (1970)

Probably the only movie in the history of cinema made completely in verse. A film which is like a poem written on the screen. Its based on the historical love story of Heer & Ranjha and all the dialogues in the movie are in rhymes and verses. Its like characters answering to each other in poems and truly an experience of its own kind. The film shows the kind of effort which has been put in by its creative team. Even the colours of the costumes are chosen according to the feel of the scenes. Though Priya Rajvansh at some places looks like plastic beauty but still she has done a fine job as Heer. A musical extravaganza with some of the finest songs of Hindi Film Industry by Madan Mohan in the voice of Mohd. Rafi. In my words the movie can be categorized as a true representative of Hindi Film Industry. Strongly recommended for musical drama lovers who love artistic expressions on the celluloid.
Directed By Chetan Anand
Starring : Raj Kumar & Priya Rajvansh
Music By Madan Mohan
